Julie Hughes, Nacoa ambassador and volunteer, has penned this beautiful poem in support of Taking Action on Addiction.
Following the huge success of Addiction Awareness Week 2023, part of our ongoing campaign work is to continue promoting the amazing work across our partner community.
Julie Hughes, a Nacoa ambassador and volunteer, kindly created this excellent poem which cleverly aligns to the campaign theme 'Everybody Knows Somebody'.
The poem explores shame, secrecy and despair, yet Julie's words end on an optimistic note - both in terms of the support that's out there (Nacoa and all of the partners supporting Taking Addiction on Addiction), but also in entering recovery.
We know that recovery is possible, and this was recently demonstrated in our groundbreaking film of the same name, 'Everybody Knows Somebody'.
We'd like to thank Julie and the Nacoa team for this amazing and heartfelt contribution.
Everybody knows somebody
Well that's easy to say
But do we admit so freely
of the secret hidden away?
Everybody knows somebody
who drinks that bit too much.
They think it goes unnoticed,
that alcohol is their unhealthy crutch.
Everybody knows somebody
and we should be doing more.
But where does one start
when you bravely knock at their door?
Everybody knows somebody
and we can start to help today.
Nacoa is there to support and guide you every step of the way.
