Taking Action on Addiction, a campaign led by The Forward Trust, is delighted to welcome Tony Adams as the new Chair of Trustees for the organisation. Tony’s appointment marks a significant milestone in the campaign’s mission to challenge stigma, promote recovery, and amplify the voices of those affected by addiction and the criminal justice system.
A Champion for Recovery
Tony Adams, best known as one of the greatest defenders in the history of Arsenal and England football, has spent the last 28 years championing addiction recovery. His own journey of overcoming alcoholism, which disrupted his professional career and led to a brief prison sentence in the 1990s, serves as a beacon of hope for others facing similar struggles.
As a passionate advocate for recovery, Tony has been an ambassador for Taking Action on Addiction since its inception, working tirelessly to reduce stigma and foster understanding around addiction. His dedication extends beyond words; in 2000, he founded the Sporting Chance Clinic, providing specialised addiction support for athletes, and later established Six Mental Health Addiction, supporting corporate employees with mental health and addiction challenges.
Leading the Charge
Tony’s new role as Chair of Trustees for The Forward Trust is a natural progression of his decades-long commitment to the cause. Reflecting on his appointment, Tony shared:
"As an Ambassador of The Forward Trust for the last 20 years, I have seen at first-hand the amazing work they do and have always been a vocal supporter of the programmes and support they provide. Their work with ex-offenders and specifically the scourge of addiction is one particularly close to my heart as a recovering addict and ex-offender. I am proud, honoured and excited to have been given the role of Chair of Trustees. I know that, together with The Forward Trust’s board, we can continue the incredible work of the former formidable chair David Bernstein, and steer and lead this fantastic charity to an incredible future."
Tony steps into the role following the 10-year leadership of David Bernstein, who has overseen The Forward Trust’s growth and success. David praised Tony as the ideal successor, saying:
“Tony shares an unwavering commitment to the mission of this remarkable organisation – to help anyone in trouble, whether with addiction or in the criminal justice system, turn their lives around and find recovery. I know that under his leadership, The Forward Trust will continue to help countless individuals and their families rebuild worthwhile and fulfilling lives."
A Shared Mission: Raising Awareness and Inspiring Change
Taking Action on Addiction has long focused on breaking down barriers to recovery and changing public perceptions of addiction. Tony’s story, which he has shared through the More Than My Past campaign, embodies the resilience and transformation the campaign seeks to highlight. As Chair, Tony will play a crucial role in reaching new audiences and strengthening support for individuals and families navigating addiction and recovery.
Addiction Awareness Week 2024
Tony’s appointment comes as Taking Action on Addiction prepares for Addiction Awareness Week 2024 (30th November - 7th December). This annual campaign brings national attention to the realities of addiction and celebrates the hope and possibility of recovery.
Mike Trace, CEO of The Forward Trust, expressed enthusiasm for Tony’s expanded role, stating:
"I have seen the inspirational impact Tony has had on a wide range of people when he shares his story. I am looking forward to working with him to take this life-affirming message to new audiences in the coming years."
